Top 5 Guidebooks for Road Trip to Mexico & Central America

While there are many guide books available for traveling in Mexico and Central America, we had specific needs relating to driving our VW van and camping. We also had limited space in the van.

As such, we had to make sure that every book we brought provided something different.

Through trial and error, we developed strong opinions on the guidebooks we brought, as some of them became essential and others soon became redundant.

1. Traveler's Guide to Mexican Camping: Explore Mexico and Belize With Your RV or Tent - Mike and Terri Church

The Churches are king and queen of Mexican camping and their book - which also covers Belize - is by far the best source for camping information. All other Mexican camping guidebooks are redundant. At times, however, we wished that expressed a stronger opinion on which campsites are good and which are not.

2. Rough Guide to Central America

Best source for low budget hotels and hostels. Misses the mark for roadtrippers in that it has only a limited amount of city maps.

3. 99 Days to Panama - John and Harriet Halkyard

Best source for roadtrippin' through Central America

4. Eyewitness Travel: Mexico

Best source for big city sight-seeing in Mexico

5. Let's Go Mexico
